Every mage must learn how to listen to and read the images in water--whether in a cup, a bowl, a puddle, or a lake. It is the only element that foretells events about to happen.

Fire (a candle flame, a bonfire, or fire in a burner, cauldron, fireplace, or fire pit) and air (smoke from incense, joss sticks, or from a pile of smoldering leaves) give messages only about present events, not the future.

As for earth, it can both explain the present and foretell the future, but only through sortilege: with the aid of material objects such as dice, rune stones, yarrow sticks, mah jong tiles, cards, and scrying balls.

Explore and master water. It is the element that fascinated Bruce Lee the most, though within the context of martial arts. Use substitutes to determine what you are most comfortable with. The usual substitutes are wine, ink, and coconut milk.
